"German firms sent weapons-grade chemicals to Syria despite sanctions — report", 25 Jun 2019.  Despite European Union sanctions, German companies were involved in exporting weapons-grade chemicals to Syria in the midst of the war, according to a report published on Tuesday. According to the report, German chemical wholesaler Brenntag AG sold the chemicals isopropanol and diethylamine to Syria in 2014 using a subsidiary in Switzerland. The recipient was a Syrian pharmaceutical company that had ties to the regime of President Bashar Assad. Reporters revealed that the diethylamine was produced by German chemicals giant BASF at a plant in the Belgian city of Antwerp. Although the chemicals can be used to make pharmaceutical drugs, they can also be used in the production of chemical weapons and nerve agents such as VX and sarin gas. Brenntag AG confirmed that the delivery of the chemicals to Syria was handled by its subsidiary in Switzerland "in accordance with the laws at the time,". Three NGOs have already filed criminal charges over the chemical exports, including the Berlin-based Syrian Archive, the organization Trial International, and the New York-based Open Society Justice Initiative.

The United States has concluded that the government of Bashar al-Assad used chlorine as a chemical weapon in May, marking the first confirmed violation of the ban on chemical weapons since Donald Trump authorized airstrikes in 2018 over Syria’s use of poison gas. The US said in May it had received numerous reports that appeared consistent with chemical exposure after an attack by Syrian government forces on Idlib province in north-west Syria, but it had made no definitive conclusion as to whether they used chemical weapons. The Trump administration has twice bombed Syria over Assad’s suspected use of chemical weapons, in April 2017 and April 2018. The US, Britain and France launched airstrikes in April 2018 against what they described as three Syrian chemical weapons targets in retaliation for a suspected gas attack that killed scores of people in a Damascus suburb earlier that month. Pompeo said Washington had also added sanctions on two Russian entities for providing fuel to the Syrian government. Russia supports Assad in the more than Syrian war.
